On October 20 1977, A plane carrying Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed killing lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, Guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and The Honkettes member Cassie Gaines along with band assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray and so today in tribute to the departed we offer Tyler Wilford’s cover of ‘Free Bird’.

This version of ‘Free Bird’ is short but if you consider the song traditionally is made up of about 2 minutes of singing and about 11 minutes of piano, bass guitar and electric guitar it makes a lot of sense.

Tyler was very daring in this 2012 performance by playing the song in a different arrangement to the classic which may be scandalous to some particularly in the Southern states of America but it proves that Tyler is very creative with this music playing whether it is his own material or a cover of another person(s) song and there is no doubting Tyler has continued to evolve musically since this release which we’ll soon see with his upcoming debut single ‘Live Again’.

While we remember the dead on this sad 38th anniversary and give our thanks for what they given to the world in their time on Earth and we most importantly give thanks to them for inspiring others to perform music to the best of their ability.
